Wing walk · 23 June 2022

Larsen's Pride was set up in memory of Larsen, who died aged 5 years old, from a rare and aggressive brain tumour. Our mission is to improve the lives of the youngest brain tumour patients (0-12) during their treatment. We do this through the delivery of soft toys and clinical resources.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

The wing walk will take place on Saturday 8th October 2022.

Larsen's Pride was set up in December 2021 in memory of my first grandson Larsen, who sadly passed away days before Christmas 2019, aged just 5, as a result of treatment for a brain tumour.

Larsen was a kind, loving, clever little boy who showed an empathy way beyond his years. At three and a half years when he was learning to read, it became apparent that he could not see properly out of his right eye. After numerous trips to the doctors and hospitals having different scans and test we had misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis, which resulted in 12 months of the wrong chemotherapy for the wrong type of tumour. During this time Larsen wanted to raise money for the children's ward at the queens medical centre. Larsen raised £3000 and got his name on the robin hood fund raising board. He did this by completing 26 slides around Nottingham in one day. He was so so proud of his achievement.

Eventually an overdue biopsy revealed a medulloepithilioma of the optic nerve, so rare only eight cases of this brain tumour were known globally. 12hrs of scheduled surgery resected + removed the tumour and Larson lost his right eye. Earlier intervention could have prevented this.

6 weeks of daily radiotherapy followed which Larsen so bravely undertook with no anesthetic so he could continue his first and only term at school. After this gruelling toxic chemotherapy with no protocol which left Larsen with untreated low platelets from which he died.

Larsen’s Pride exists to bring courage and comfort to children stuck in hospital, undergoing terrifying surgery and awful chemotherapy for brain tumour treatment, with the beautiful big cats that kept Larsen company.

Larsen’s Pride are also developing clinical resources to improve the lives of children with brain tumours. This year, they are developing resources for awake radiotherapy for the youngest brain tumour patients.

This is important because around 600 children are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year and 88% will die within 5 years of their diagnosis.

Brain tumour research only receives around 1% of the national spend despite being the biggest cancer killer of children (and adults under 40).

Thank you for reading my families story and hopefully donating to a great cause. Sheila xoxo
