I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 19 years old in 2006. At the time I vaguely knew anything about Diabetes and how serious my condition was. I only knew of grandparents who had had it, however they were type 2 diabetics and their care was so much different to mine and I didn’t understand it. After 12 months of poor control I then realised how serious my condition was. (With those affected by diabetes, only 10% are actually Type 1). Taking insulin was and still is my life line. 16 years on, the progression of Research and development has been phenomenal, to the point where I am not having to inject insulin 5/6 times a day, I have a pump that does that for me. I am currently taking part in a pilot for an advanced pump (looping system) which calculates my background insulin for me by connecting via blue tooth to a sensor that reads my blood sugar every 5 minutes. It is phenomenal and may add some extra years on my life. So family and friend  in memory of my grandparents, in support to my loved ones who battle with diabetes every day, who have had it in pregnancy and for myself, On 14 November, I am taking on the #NailingDiabetes challenge to help Diabetes UK nail a cure. I am painting my nails blue to help raise awareness of diabetes - and make more research breakthroughs possible. I'm doing it for the days we feel like we're nailing diabetes, and the days we don't. Diabetes is relentless, but so are we. There are 4.8 million people living with diabetes in the UK, the complications of which lead to over 500 premature deaths every week.
