Shetland Streakers Festive Streak 2017 · 16 November 2017

'minding you while you mind them' Through our specially trained volunteers we seek to offer accessible and sustainable support to any individual in Shetland who is experiencing a bereavement with the aim that no one in Shetland finds themselves alone and struggling with their grief.

Story

NOTE: If you do not have a preference for which of the two amazing charities you'd like your donation to go to, can we ask you to check which one has the least and donate to that please? At the moment, out of our two chosen charities Shetland Bereavement Support Services has the most simply because we were able to set it up first. We will use the tshirt money and cash raised at The Final Mile to even things out if need be. By donating to THIS page you are donating to SBSS. This is the link for the other charity (copy and paste for easy checking) https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/shetlandfestivestreak2017mn

Thanks for taking the time to visit this JustGiving page.

You can use this page to sign up for the 2017 Shetland Streakers Festive Streak. By donating a peerie bit of money to the page you will have also pledged to do at least ten minutes of exercise a day, every day, between US Thanksgiving (November 23rd) and New Year's Eve. Thirty-nine days in total....You do not need to live in Shetland or even have any Shetland connections to join us, so please read on even if you've never set foot on a Shetland island!

Shetland Bereavement Support Service and the Shetland branch of Macmillan Cancer Support are the chosen charities this year - voted for by the members of the Shetland Streakers Facebook page who we think have chosen really well. Both charities help people who are going through a time in their life when they might benefit from exercise, so we are hoping that some of the service users from both charities feel strong enough to take the plunge and sign up too - even if they are 'Secret Streakers'! By donating to THIS page you are donating to SBSS.

How to sign up for the Streak

  • Please click on 'Donate' and put whatever amount you would like to donate. The minimum is £2 (set by Just Giving) but if you can spare more that would be wonderful.
  • There is also the option to tick the box for 'hide my donation amount' if you prefer.
  • The next page gives you an option to leave a message. This is the bit where you are signing up for the Streak, so think carefully about what you want to put! You can simply write that you are aiming to do at least a ten minute walk every day, or you can put more detail, or you can put anything in it which helps you feel like you have officially signed up and that you will be held accountable. If you are feeling confident you can type that you will give a certain amount to the cause for every day you miss! Use your imagination. :-)
  • Write your name in the box indicated and head to the next page to follow instructions to actually donate the money.

Daily Support

Please visit the Facebook page to see what events are on around Shetland which you can join in with, and also to read what other Streakers have been up to. Just search for Shetland Streakers or copy and paste the following - https://www.facebook.com/groups/286270961493422/

Use it to post updates for what you have done each day, or even to ask for a bit of motivation or some advice or inspiration if you are in a rut with your exercise, worried about starting a new activity, or needing an exercise buddy.

There will be:

  • daily tips (some from properly trained health and fitness experts, not just the enthusiastic lass who runs the page!)
  • links to videos for a daily workout which you can do and then compare notes with fellow members
  • advice, inspiration and motivation from other Streakers
  • information about what is on around Shetland which you can join in with to tick off your Streak for the day - classes at SRT centres, aerobics, Jazzercise, FBX, yoga, pilates, moving mediation, circuit classes, flexibility sessions, sea swims, roller skating, walks, runs etc....
  • extra special events put on by lovely people in Shetland just for the Streak - and often with proceeds and/or donations going to the charity too. Watch out for extra classes from your favourite instructor or coach as well as some brand new experiences.
  • details of our final mile - on the last day - which you can complete by walking, running or pushing a buggy. A chance to meet your fellow Streakers, celebrate your success, and have a hot mince pie and warm spicy apple juice.
  • the chance to post and ask for an exercise buddy - if you're planning a walk, a visit to the gym or an attempt at a new class post your intention in the group and ask if anyone wants to join you. You're much more likely to follow through with the exercise if you will be letting someone else down if you don't.

Other Donations

You can also use this page to donate extra money.

Instructors - If you are an instructor, health and fitness expert or athlete and you have kindly agreed to donate the proceeds of one of your classes or sessions, or have put a donation box out at a class, use this page to add that cash to the pot.

Streakers - If you would like ask friends and family for sponsorship to help you complete the Streak then sending them the link to this page is the easiest way for them to be able to donate direct to the charities. Remember to tell them to use the 'message' section to write the name of the person they are sponsoring (you!), and to leave a good luck or well done message at the same time if they want.

Streak Tshirts

You can order a 2017 Festive Streak t-shirt from Intersport as a souvenir of your achievement. when all orders are in we will be using this page to put the profits from the sales in - Intersport have very kindly agreed to donate all proceeds to the charities. Pop into the shop and complete an order form, message them on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/INTERSPORTShetland/ or phone them on 01595 694959. We can post out too if you are not in Shetland.

The slogan this year is 'Merry Fitness and Happy New Rear!' and the tshirts are a bright orange (great for being visible on these dark nights) and are made of technical, sweat-wicking fabric. The cost is between £20 and £25 depending on if you would like extra prints or logos attached. Feel free to customise your tshirt if it means you are more likely to wear them!
