Story
Medic Malawi is a young and dynamic charity, based in Shrewsbury. We are special firstly because every single penny raised goes to those in Malawi for whom it is intended - there are no UK salaries or expenses at all; and secondly, because we work exclusively and directly with the community leaders in a rural district in one of the poorest parts of central Malawi, itself one of the poorest (but most peaceful and beautiful), countries in the world. Through donations and the direct funding of Medic Malawi, a life saving hospital has been built , together with a feeding centre for the malnourished, two orphanages, two schools and employment projects. With our clear focus and regular contact we can be sure of the proper use of money for care, relief and development.
The great news is that 2014 will see the opening of the 'Shrewsbury Eye Clinic' next to our hospital. This is outcome of a visit by Salopians in 2012, and has been funded by Shrewsbury School. On the next school visit it is hoped that Shrewsbury students will put the finishing touches to the Clinic. It addresses a key local problem - unnecessary blindness through disease, including in children, is a serious and heartbreaking menace in the area. Along with the general costs of the hospital, the funds raised through this SportsNight will be crucial in getting the Clinic up, running and saving sight - because even with volunteer visiting surgeons, an operation to restore sight costs £30 for special medicines and aftercare. It is a brilliant project, hugely needed, and with an outcome which will mean so much to individuals. Thank you for your support.
