Story

My dad was the best. I know everybody says that, but it's true. He was a larger than life character and a family man with a big cheeky grin. He loved motorbikes, cars and music. Thanks to him, I was burbling along to The Doors in the car with him and my mum before I could even speak. I still remember him driving me around in his old fashioned, vintage car (that we affectionately dubbed 'Brum') to and from my Nana's house. He was loving and funny and just so incredibly kind.

My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease when he was just 37 years old. I was only 7 myself at the time, so I don't really remember the day he was diagnosed. But I do remember my dad living with dementia for 7 years and I remember how much Alzheimer's Society supported my family when we needed it the most.

My dad died on 22 March 2004 and not a single day goes by that I don't miss him or remember him. For the past 17 years, I've been determined to fundraise as much as possible in my dad's memory, so that someday a world without dementia will be possible.

My dad would have been turning the big 6-0 this year and to mark his big milestone birthday I'm raising funds for the charity that is closest to my heart. Alongside my amazing video gaming family in Green Team, we'll be videogaming and streaming for 24 hours straight to raise money for Alzheimer's Society. I like to think my dad would have approved and probably laughed at the thought of me, sleep deprived and generally making an idiot of myself on the internet.

There's an estimated 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK right now, and that figure is projected to reach 1 million by 2025. Alzheimer's Society are one of the UK's leading dementia charities and fund vital dementia research to improve diagnosis, find new treatments and improve care for people living with dementia. The Society also provides support, advice and information for anyone affected by dementia.

Alzheimer's Society are a lifeline for so many people and a truly worthy cause. Please unite with me against dementia and help Alzheimer's Society continue to be there for anyone affected by dementia.
