The Civil Liberties Trust funds the charitable work of Liberty - to protect civil liberties and promote human rights. Liberty raises awareness through the media, helps thousands of people each year with free legal advice and information, influences policy and takes on key legal cases.

Story

I’m raising money for The Civil Liberties Trust, which funds the work of the human rights organisation Liberty. As a Liberty member of staff, a big part of my job is to help safeguard human rights and civil liberties in the UK. Founded on the principles of human dignity and individual freedom, Liberty holds the powerful to account and ensures ordinary people have a voice.

In 2018, Liberty is campaigning to end indefinite immigration detention. Every year, the Government locks up nearly 30,000 people – including children, elderly people and survivors of rape, trafficking and torture.

They have not been sentenced for any crime. No judge authorises their incarceration. And worst of all – there’s no limit on how long they can be held.

Without a time limit, the UK’s detention regime is the most brutal in Europe. People enter prison-like detention centres with no idea when, or if, they will be freed. Some are held for years.

Please donate to shine a light on this shameful practice and end indefinite immigration detention.

Running the London Marathon for Liberty allows me to defend human rights by taking on a new physical and mental challenge, pushing me to my limits. I hope to inspire others to fundraise for Liberty in order to achieve their own goals while promoting the importance of human rights and civil liberties.

I’m delighted to say, that for every £1,000 I raise, Oak Foundation will release £1,000 of funding!
