National eating disorder week is 26th Feb - 4th March and we will be wearing our bright socks to support B-eats SOCK IT TO EATING DISORDERS campaign.
Before qualifying as a personal trainer Sian suffered with bulimia nervosa for many years, a horrible, paralysing illness which affected her job, social life, self esteem, confidence and relationships. She also learnt first hand how poorly the NHS treat eatings disorders, waiting over a year for treatment. Luckily, with hard work, a strong will to fight and support from family and friends, Sian managed to turn her life around and make a full recovery.
Back in 2009, Kerry was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa. She was told if she didn’t change her chances of having children was slim. This pushed her to make changes. With the help of a counsellor she was able to fully recover and fell pregnant 2 years later with her son, Archie. From this experience and her love of fitness, she decided she wanted to help and support others. In 2013 she enrolled at college to start her journey in the fitness industry.
Sian and Kerry were both lucky to survive and beat their eating disorders, but this is not the case for many sufferers. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illnesses and unfortunately not much of the government's health budget is spent of helping people with eating disorders.
B-eat is the Uk's leading eating disorder charity and had been helping sufferers and their families since 1989. Today they are not only helping people with eating disorders but also providing support for those with emotional overeating and difficulties with food, weight and shape. What remains at B-eat's heart is the need to give help and hope to anyone affected by an eating disorder. The need to reach out and help is vital and their essential support services do that each and every day with their helplines, website, self help and support groups and online support. No one should have to face an eating disorder alone.
