Story

Monday 19th April 2010

Update from Chile: Elba told us today that, thanks to the generous donations made by individuals and organisations, the Chilean Sanctuary is now ready for winter, with remedial work having been carried out over the last month to repair the damage caused by the devastating earthquake in February this year.

As a result of the quake, the centre is peparing to receive 14 more monkeys that have been confiscated from zoos and circuses. Ongoing support for this fantastic project is still needed to build new enclosures for these individuals so please give what you can! Many thanks to everyone that has helped our friends in Chile so far!

Saturday 6th March - Thank you!
We are delighted to report that, thanks to the incredible response our appeal has received, we will be sending £5645.38 over to Elba and her team on Monday of next week. Thanks to all those who have supported the campaign, International Animal Rescue and Care For the Wild and particularly to IFAW for their extremely generous contribution.

Elba is absolutely delighted and sends her thanks to all. Materials are now being bought and labourers brought in to begin the rebuild.

There is still lots of work to do and this project needs ongoing support. If you are interested in making a lasting contribution to the sanctuary, why not adopt Esperanzo, one of the centre's howler monkey residents? Adopters receive regular updates and can know that Elba's work is being supported going forward. Visit www.monkeysanctuaryshop.co.uk to adopt.

THANK YOU ALL!!

Tuesday 29th February 2010 - Update from Chile
Following the first earthquake, the centre has suffered no less than 200 aftershocks - 80 of which measured higher than 5 degrees on the Richter scale. What was initially assessed as major, but manageable, damage has now escalated to some of the areas of the centre being completely destroyed. The cost of rebuilding the worst-hit sections will cost £3,850. The team will then assess and prioritise the work that needs to be carried out elsewhere so the entire cost is only going to rise.

From Elba:

"I would like to thank you all for the interest that you have shown in helping us. It makes me happy to know that we are not alone in this tragedy that has befallen our country"

Please keep giving - thank you from all of us.

Sunday 28th February 2010 - Urgent Appeal

In the early hours of Saturday morning, an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale hit Chile, causing devastation to the capital city, Santiago, and the surrounding area.

Wild Futures (formerly The Monkey Sanctuary Trust) has worked with the SIGLO XXI primate sanctuary, based just outside of Santiago, for many years and today launches a special appeal for supporters to donate funds to the project in order for them to repair the damage caused to the centre by the natural disaster.

We were able to make contact with the centre's Director, Elba Munoz, on Sunday afternoon, after phone communication was restored to the area. Elba confirmed that all monkeys and humans are safe and well but they now have to work round-the-clock to be able to repair the damage caused before the beginning of the rainy season in just over a month's time. She highlighted the need for support and sent thanks for any help that could be offered.

We will be updating this page as soon as we hear more on the situation but, in the meantime, would like to thank you on behalf of both Wild Futures and SIGLO for your invaluable support.

Many thanks.
