Story

For many young people with additional learning needs difficulties with processing sensory information affect every aspect of their life and ability to access learning. Information is received but not always processed or perceived correctly, this results in senses intensifying or being completely absent. For example, hyper-sensitivity (over-sensitivity) can cause a pain sensation from clothes irritation against skin, an intolerance to normal room lighting or a dislike of physical contact. Hypo-sensitivity (under-sensitivity) may cause a pupil to create loud noises, bang items together or rock robustly in order to experience stimulation. A sensory room provides a specialised space which can be easily adapted to control the sensory input and to vary the stimuli received through a number of the senses. It can be an exciting and rousing, calm or stimulating environment, depending on the young person's needs.

At Dorothy Goodman School our main goal is for our young people to aim high, dream and achieve. Despite their additional needs each of our children and young people have dreams, whether that be scoring the winning goal at Wembley, being independent of their wheelchair or finding their dream job. We want to help them follow their dreams by providing the best opportunities, facilities and equipment. Every penny raised helps us do this.Thank you for your amazing support #IAIM
