Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Sadly Lucas passed away on the 12th September 2018, after a courageous 9 month battle. We will now work together with Friends, Family and colleagues old and new to hit that original £1m target in the memory of Lucas, who was an inspiration to us all #YNWA x
There are two dates that we will always remember
August 22nd - The date Alex was told he had Hodgkin's Lymphoma
December 18th - The date Lucas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia
One was tough to accept, but two children diagnosed with differing forms of Blood Cancer within four months of each other, could couldn't make this shit up!
We were looking forward to life, we didn't plan for what happened next!
- We don't want to see our boy's names on the white board in the ward for Teenagers with Cancer
- We don't want to have witnessed daily blood thinning injection procedures that had to be done.
- We didn't want to see countless cannula's fitted into arms that had given up
- We didn't want to see countless burses try to take blood from what was left of a pin cushioned arm
- We didn't choose to know what a Bone Marrow scrape was
- We didn't want our children to be administered with Chemo and to see the side effects kick in of Hair Loss, Sickness & Extreme weight loss
- We didn't want to be told that the first regime of treatment hadn't worked!
- We didn't want our boys to give up on University and College
But we are here, this is our Life and we will get through this with both boys and beat this successfully in 2018, it will be a long journey and we've heard this phrase a lot - we'll take it 'Day by Day'
We have been blown away by the help and support we have received from everyone at Poole Hospital, The Senior Consultants, Nurses, Doctors, Auxiliary Support Nurses, Cancer Specialist nurses and not forgetting the wonderful volunteers!
Something that has really helped is on our journey has been the amazing work of these charities
Vision for Vincent - that have worked in conjunction with The Teenage Cancer Trust to provide a Teenage and Young Adult unit for patients with Cancer. This unit is first of its kind in Dorset and ensures patients will have surroundings more appropriate for their age and circumstances. This has made Lucas's time in hospital more comfortable and he has been able to enjoy time with family and friends in a safe and clinical environment They'll be providing a nurse of the two rooms in Poole hospital.
LEAF - Leukaemia Educating and Fundraising - Supporting blood cancer patients, Leaf was founded in 2006 from Natasha Hunt's hospital bed after she was diagnosed with Leukaemia just 3 weeks after giving birth to her second son. After 6 months of chemotherapy and being kept in isolation for most of this time, Natasha was determined to bring something positive out of her experience by supporting others that have been diagnosed with this disease.....so Leaf was born. Natasha has been an amazing support to Lucas and the family having someone that knows what Lucas has gone through and can talk and help him through his journey has been invaluable and inspirational.
Bloodwise - Together blood cancers are not only the fifth largest group of cancers in the UK, but the third largest cause of cancer deaths. Dr Alasdair Rankin, Director or Research at Bloodwise "Very few cases of blood cancer can prevented by lifestyle changes, which is why we emphasise that research to improve blood cancer treatment is vital to reducing death rates. We also know that people with blood cancers have a different experience of cancer care, which is why we must ensure their specific needs are considered and addressed in NHS cancer care strategies"
I'm sure you'll agreed that these charities Help, Support & hopefully one day will help to Kick out Cancer!
So please help, Lucas, Alex and our friends and family raise £1,000,000 to support these wonderful charities by getting behind me and joining my fundraising team to smash Simons £1 Million Pound Challenge, join the team - create the event and have some fun!
Many Thanks and Happy Fundraising
