Henley-On-Thames Triathlon 2013 · 22 June 2013 ·
Thanks for visiting my Just Giving page supporting Cancer Research UK.
Ok, so the first time I wrote this page, I might have got the swim distance wrong.... 400m, not 800m, but the basic story is the same! A young colleague of mine put me to shame, completing a 4km cross-country race that culminated in wading through a lake, several months into a course of chemo. Sadly he lost his battle aged just 26, but if ever there was someone who showed that life is for living and taking up challenges, he was it.
At the time, the furthest I’d ever run was 3km, reluctantly, at school 20 years ago. So, inspired by my young colleague, I’ve entered Henley Sprint Triathlon at the end of June; 400m swim, 25km bike ride and 5km run. Remarkably, I can now swim and run further than ever before, and running has actually become vaguely enjoyable! I have set myself a target time of 1hr 45. For someone who, until December, only really ran from the tennis base line to the net, that’s not bad! And when I’ve felt like collapsing on the floor, I think of the picture of my colleague, grinning his head off, half-way across the lake, and everything feels better.
I’m trying to raise £500 for Cancer Research UK, and I’d really appreciate your support. That amount could train a whole team of information nurses, helping them to support those affected by cancer and their families.
