Story

When your dog is no longer a cute puppy but you're not willing to pay for a trainer or dog walker; when you want to move in with your partner but they don’t like dogs; when you decide to move to a nicer apartment but the landlord doesn't allow dogs; when you haven't researched the breed of your puppy and can't cope with their breed traits and now having problems. Handing your dog into an animal rescue centre or worse the local dog pound can seem like an easy way out- at least for you.

The brutal reality is that the UK is massively over populated with dogs. There are thousands of breeders registered and thousands that aren't! Puppy farms are more prominent than ever before, sentencing thousands of dogs to a life in a bucket, producing babies in unspeakable circumstances. 1000's of (UK) dogs every month, both handed in or picked up by Local Authority dog pounds are euthanised within 7 days due to massively over populated kennels and leave this world in a bin bag- regardless of temperament.

Aside from local pounds, most other rescue organisations despite best efforts don't have the resources, knowledge or expertise to deal with dogs in this environment. Asking a dog to sit in a kennel for 23 hours (or more) a day without issue is beyond unrealistic. The longer dogs are in kennels, naturally the more stressed they become. They will begin showing more signs of stress whether that be; mouthing, anxiety based behaviours or even aggression towards people or other dogs.

For thousands of these dogs they are condemned to years in kennels or more commonly euthanised.

So Why Dogs Trust?

Dogs Trust is an International Charity Organisation covering across the UK with 21 rehabilitation and rehoming centres. I have worked for Dogs Trust for the last 2 years. Working as a Specialist Trainer (or now known as Rehabilitation Officer) within the amazing Manchester Training Team.I have watched Dogs enter the centre with: extreme neglect, ex-puppy farm bitches, desperate health conditions and abuse.

Dogs Trust strives to never put a healthy dog down. With each centre having Behaviour Advisors, trainers and amazing kennel staff all dogs are constantly under review and assessment during their time in kennels. Every waking hour, all dogs receive (World leading) appropriate and specific training or behaviour modification programmes to ensure that they are comfortable and getting nearer to finding their forever home! No dog is labelled aggressive, dominant or stupid!

From desperate health conditions, inappropriate behaviours, forms of aggression and those that are incredibly anxious or simply petrified. No dog is overlooked or neglected. Even when our dogs find their forever homes, they are supported with FREE behaviour advice, support and training for the remainder of the dog's life- just to ensure they are as happy and healthy as they possibly can be.

Alongside this Dogs Trust Dog Schools are littered through the UK, helping to educate, create awareness and teach owners how to appropriately live with their pooches, avoiding kennels in the first place!

Many people may say "Dogs Trust is a wealthy charity and other smaller organisations need the support". Dogs Trust proactively offers support, education and development to other, smaller organisations. Now operating abroad in many countries helping to; neuter and vaccinate, seize illegal activity and offer education Dogs Trust really has everything covered.

I am running to help raise awareness of what an amazing charity Dogs Trust truly is. Finally dogs that have been unable to cope within a kennel environment, despite best efforts and months of tried and tested methods, who sadly I have lost during my time here. These little heroes have taught me so much that I have carried on unto 100's of other dogs I have worked with. Not only that they have bravely offered a kennel space to enable us rehome a 100+ more dogs each year.

I sincerely ask you to think. Whether thats to advise your friend, family member or even yourself!...are you capable to welcome a dog into your life? Can you afford it and would you be willing to work on any training or behaviour issues that all dogs naturally develop? We live in a society where people are unwilling to communicate with their dogs appropriately and in the long run that is what kills tens of thousands of dogs each year.

So please even if you don't donate your money, please donate your time to think of each and every dog that suffers the traumas of spending their precious days in a kennel environment... and how easily avoidable it can be.

“Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, their world will change forever.”
