I have set myself a challenge to become a member of the elite Bicinglette group of The Club des Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux and at the same time, I am looking to raise funds for a deserving charity ‘The West of England MS Therapy Centre’.
The challenge is to ride my bike up and down Mont-Ventoux six times in 24 hours on 6th July 2015 covering a total of 274 km (170 miles) and 8800 m (28,871 ft) of vertical ascent - only 40m lower than the height of Mount Everest.
In 1988 The Cinglés du Mont-Ventoux (Club / Brotherhood of the Windy Mount) was created in the aim of proving that any cyclist with normal practice could climb the Giant of Provence three times in one day by the three main roads to the top. In 2007 a new course dubbed Bicinglette allows the bravest to double the Cinglé course and to ride up the Ventoux six times in the same day. There are 3 routes up Mont-Ventoux so I will hopefully do each route twice.
Only 103 riders have been successful in attempting the Bicinglette – 13 of which have been British. I am hoping to become the oldest British rider to complete the ride at the age of 52. I have managed to persuade my wife Emma to support me on the day by driving the route to provide me with adequate food, water and kind words of encouragement such as ‘get back on the bike…now!’. She will be accompanied by our daughter Tessa.
I became aware of the The West of England MS Therapy Centre through a close pal of mine, Roger who has Multiple Sclerosis. The Centre provides a range of health and social care services to individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological conditions to alleviate some of the most distressing symptoms and encourage individuals to remain fit, active and lead independent lives for as long as possible.Subsequently another close friend has recently been diagnosed with MS providing further incentive to complete the challenge and raise funds for Centre.
