The Grand Brighton Half Marathon 2020 · 23 February 2020 ·

At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

So, in the spring of this year my lovely daughter Cassie decided, in the warmth and sun of the Philippines, to enter to run her first-ever half-marathon - in the warmth and sun of Brighton in, er, February 2020.

About 7-8 weeks’ ago she started training and one evening after a dusk run came home distressed having been wolf-whistled and shouted at by idiots in cars. I suggested that maybe I might run with her sometimes to eliminate the risk of that happening again (who’s going to wolf whistle me?) and since then have in effect been training with her.

On Sunday last weekend (15/12) we ran our longest distance- 8 miles in 1 hour 40 minutes. Not bad for a 26-year old who has never done much running before or for a 60 year old with previously prolapsed discs and a heart condition!

It’s been real fun running with Cassie so now I’ve signed up too and we plan to run the race together. Completion time is not important: getting to the end is what matters.

It will not surprise you that I am running to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. Dementia is one of the great curses of our age: I have painful experience of how it damages the physical and mental health of those affected, both those afflicted and family.  My poor mother had eight miserable years of it and has sadly just passed away.   A cure, or at least a means of better alleviating the misery of it, is urgently needed and so the more I can raise to help fund research the better.

I have set a very modest target of £200 so please sponsor me if you can or if not then I hope you will wish me well and cheer me on on 23 February come rain, shine or whatever else the gods decide to bestow! It’s certainly unlikely to feel like the Philippines!
