Story

Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Brain and Spine Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

I am raising money for the Brain & Spine Foundation because more people die or are left severely disabled by neurological disorders than either heart disease or Cancer.  A few facts:

Head injury affects almost one million people a year in the UK - nearly half a million are kids.

Over 12% are due to sports related injury.

The range of neurological disorders affecting the brain, spine, and peripheral nervous system is almost endless and they affect all age groups.

So please sponsor me now!

More Information About The Brain & Spine Foundation

The charity undertakes valuable work in relation to:
*Palsy, hydrocephalus, spinal cord injury, cervical myelopathy, encephalitis and CJD affect over 3 million people and are the most common cause of death and disability in the UK.  They are more common than heart disease and cancer.
*Nearly a million people a year attend hospital with a head injury.
*Stroke will kill one in ten of us.
*Dementia has become the most costly single disease affecting the advanced world.
* Back pain alone accounts for more lost working days - 30 million - than any other condition.
*Disorders of the brain and spine are also amongst the most common to affect the young.
*Head injury is the most common cause of death in teenagers, accounting for 25% of all deaths amongst the 15 to 19 age group.
*Brain tumours are the most common form of solid tissue cancer in young children, accounting for 10% of the deaths in five to nine year olds.
*Over 80% of spinal injuries occur in the young.
*150,000 children have active epilepsy and over 1 million people have a history of seizures.
*Unfortunately, compared to other areas of medicine, funding of the neurosciences is low.  Of our 760 NHS hospitals, only 39 have neuroscience centres.  As a result 95% of stroke or head injury patients never see a specialist.
*Funding medical research that will lead to improvements in the prevention, treatment and care of disorders of the brain and spine.
*Promoting education in neurological conditions for medical professionals.
*Providing information and support for patients and carers.
In the twelve years since its launch, the Brain and Spine Foundation has evolved from an organisation focused principally on research, to one which provides a wide range of services for neuroscience centres throughout the country, patients, carers and health professionals, as well as supporting a number of innovative research projects.
