Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition called Hereditary Spastic paresis (HSP). It causes muscle stiffness which affects balance and ultimately my mobility, it took four years of testing and clinical examinations to get my diagnosis.
The world of neurological testing is a very scary place to be, the path to diagnosis is not straight forward and takes time. Even with a diagnosis there is sometimes no cure or even treatment available, unfortunately my condition falls into that category, there is nothing I can take to either make this go away or relieve symptoms... i'm stuck with it!
However, a pain in the ass this may be, I still consider myself lucky. My condition may make everyday things I used to take for granted more challenging but it is not life shortening, with a bit of ingenuity, resourcefulness, determination and positivity I am learning to live well with HSP.
My challenges pale into insignificance compared to an MND diagnosis with a life expectancy of two years and no cure. MND is not as rare as you think, one in 300 people will develop motor neurone disease @onein300.
Loads of amazing research is happening at the moment to find a cure or at least some way of slowing down the degenerative process #United2EndMND campaign but funding is desperately needed. Inspired by the bravery and the work these MND warriors, @Rob7Burrow @MNDoddie5 @DarbyRimmerMND @MummywithM, have done to raise public awareness to MND, I am dedicating my walk to them and anyone else living with this devastating disease.
I aim to walk 100 miles in 4 weeks starting on Thursday 7th October and finishing on Saturday 6th November. This may not seem a lot, but with my stiff legs it will be a challenge so to spur me on i will be joined virtually by @kenmcgilloway, @jacquelinemcintyre, @fionamccandless, @carolinesproule, @decsmg, @traceymcgilloway and my walking buddies in Sheffield @simontaylor52, @bmg85 and @carmun.cussons :)
Thank you for taking the time to read my just giving page and any support you can give for this incredible cause would be greatly appreciated.
Proud to campaign alongside @Rob7Burrow, @MNDoddie5, @mndassoc, @MNDScotland.
Time to act @sajidjavid, @BorisJohnson, @RishiSunak, £50 million 5year funding to find a cure #MND research.
Thank you
