Story

Dear all,

2022 will see me taking on a new challenge - the London Marathon!

The last time I ran a marathon was in 2017 and life has changed somewhat since then, so I'm lacing up my trainers again and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to run the London Marathon in support of a charity which is close to my heart. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

As some of you may know, in 2021 I joined the crew at Conwy Lifeboat station as a volunteer crew member. Since joining I have been kitted out with a full set of inshore lifeboat (ILB) crew kit and received some first class training. All of this comes at a cost and I would like to do my bit to fund my kit.

The RNLI is funded primarily by kind donations. 92% of the total income comes from donations. As a charity that is independent of the government, the RNLI receives no government funding. To give you an idea of the cost of the kit and training; the average cost of training per crew member is £1,400 and the ILB dry suit costs £800, a thermal suit costs £230, a helmet costs £350 and a life jacket costs £336.

You can see more about the running costs of the RNLI here https://rnli.org/about-us/how-the-rnli-is-run/running-costs

I'll be posting regular updates here and on Facebook as my training progresses.

RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.
