Beat is the UK’s eating disorder charity. Our mission is to end the pain and suffering caused by eating disorders. These serious mental illnesses ruin and, too often, take lives. Our Helpline is available online or by phone for anyone suffering, as well as their family and friends.

Story

Beat is the UK's leading charity aiding those with eating disorders - anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorders... Destructive illness which can ruin the lives of their sufferers through isolating and manipulating them. Beat provides direct personal care to sufferers, supporting their recovery and pointing them in the right direction back to a happy and healthy lifestyle; it also leads campaigns against the stigma and misunderstanding associated with the illness as well as providing indepth research into the causes and effective treatments.

1 in 3 sufferers never fully recover from their illness, anorexia nervosa holds the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric conditions, however still their is very little support in the community. Beat has a simple ethos: Eating disorders can be beaten - and this is true, with many people reaching recovery each year, however many people are left stuck in the viscious circle. With the right support and care, their would be fewer people falling into eating disorders and many people able to climb out of the dark place they find themselves in, and their would be far fewer fatalities of often young and successful individuals.

£1000 enables Beat to set up a support group for sufferers, which is why I have set it as my fundraising goal. So far I have raised a good sum, however we need to keep up this momentum to truly make a difference! So if there is any way you can get involved, through making a donation or contacting me and getting involved in one of my fundraising events - please do. Your efforts shall go directly to supporting Beat on their mission - you can make a true difference. If you would rather make a direct donation offline, just get in touch - but this site is entirely secure and all money goes directly to Beat.

I feel anorexia has been with me from a very young age, I can certainly remember feeling unhappy with my body and my control over my body from when I was about 9 and actively seeking control from when I began secondary school. I am now 18 and still in the road to recovery after two referals to specialist inpatient units, The Phoenix Centre and Rhodes Farm Clinic. I am now back home, physically well and although I know I still have a long path to travel before I feel entirely content with myself, atleast I have been given the chance to regain a normal life - I am currently applying to university and finishing my a-levels, which even last year I thought was completely over. Fundraising for Beat is certainly a big part of my life, my friends are the most brilliantly enthusiastic people too and together we have raised over £300 so far, and coming up in the next few weeks I am holding a car boot sale and a sack race around St Albans. This is all leading up to my skydive in August...

Feel free to get in touch if you'd like a little more information or anything.

Thank you.
