Slum Run 2014 Kireka · 14 September 2014
I have been working to support young social entrepreneurs in Uganda for many years and I have seen what they can achieve with effective training and a belief in themselves. One such project is the Slum Run, devised and evolved in 2012, by Francis Ssuuna, then 16, to help stop children living in Kireka that were forced to labour in stone quarries for their food. Francis is a member of the Butterfly Project I founded in 2009 and a young social entrepreneur. This is the third and, we hope, the biggest Slum Run, where he hopes to support 50 young athletes in the Acholi Quarter slum, 25 boys and 25 girls. By supporting these children with school requirements, there will be no need for them to mine stone or collect scrap to survive and their lives can become more purposeful, as a result. To help support the Slum Run, there is a run in Small Heath Birmingham that anyone can take part in. You can find more information at http://cyen.org.uk about where this run is taking place.
