Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am the owner of SM9 Fitness which is located in Peniel, Carmarthen, roughly two miles from Glangwili Hospital. We will be running an event in order to raise as much money as possible for the Special Baby Care Unit. Our original target is £1,000 and the event will last 24 hours. At 09:00am on Friday 16th of July 2021  we will have at least one member of the gym continuously running for a period of 20 minutes around the local village. There is a perfect 1 mile loop which takes us from and back to the gym door.

The Special Baby Care Unit in Glangwili Hospital has 12 cots. There are 4 cots for babies who need high dependency level of care and 8 cots for babies who need special level of care. The unit also provides intensive care for babies until they can be transferred to an intensive care unit.

The unit cares for babies who need extra support following birth. This includes babies born on time and premature babies. If a baby is more than 8 weeks premature they would be born in an intensive care unit (Swansea, Cardiff or Newport) and be transferred back to Carmarthen as soon as their condition allows.

The service has a Neonatal Outreach team who support babies and families after the baby has been discharged from SCBU. There is also a team of neonatal therapists who work closely with the unit and outreach team caring for babies in SCBU and in the community.

The unit will soon be moving into a newly refurbished unit. There will be 2 overnight rooms for parents who wish to be close to their baby and 2 room for the parents and baby prior to discharge home, all with en-suite facilities.

One example of how the money raised maybe used, is to purchase heated mattresses for small babies to help to keep them warm and prevent them from having to be admitted to special care and separated from their mothers.

The team are also investigating a system called "V Create", which is a system for taking videos and sending them onto parents when they cannot be with their babies. They are also in the planning stages of providing pamper bags for parents who have a baby in SCBU. Again funds raised may contribute to these ideas in the future.
