An intrepid team of adventurers put together by Jo Whyles (only qualification - to own a pair of smelly boots!) tackled the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Walk successfully on Saturday 16 April.
Intensive training (walking to the pub and back the night before in some cases) left us all equally unprepared for the challenge and each chose to do it in their own way.
Nick shot off with the finish line and pub in mind to be round in a mindblowing 9hrs 20 mins, with Randy (our most elderly statesman) coming in an hour behind. Claire and Pippa were first ladies home and were in the cafe when Jo and Sam finished after 11 hrs 26mins, ably assisted by Lucy up and down the last mountainous stretch of 7 miles. The remaining team members came in various stages of euphoria and despair over the next hour or so and all were revived by a pint and a burger - with the exception of Chris-O who needed his brow mopping by the doctor (not girly at all, Chris - we girls made it without medical assistance!)
Each of us took it in turns for a complete meltdown on the way, but teamwork soon sorted that out - even the mapreading became a team effort when the girls were too busy talking and took a wrong turn on Pen y Ghent!
Jo O managed to face-plant in a bog and Debs climbed into the support vehicle at every opportunity, hoping the girls would forget she was there and leave without her.
John, Jan, Lucy, Daisy and Jonny provided support, pasta salad, coffee, isotonic drinks, ibuprofen, clean socks and a kick up the whatsit when needed and got the entire team round - an amazing effort by all concerned.
A week on and our muscles are still sore, but the sense of achievement is huge. Except for Runa, who wants to do it all over again and get a better time!
As we did this just for a laugh, we hoped that a charity could benefit along the way and have chosen Anna's Hope, a charity that as many of you will know, helped the Wade family when Jonny was taken ill some years ago.
Please give whatever you can spare to this hugely worthwhile cause. Every penny goes into helping children with brain tumours and associated problems, not only whilst they are sick, but also supporting them and their families in the longer term.
