Story

Thank you for visiting the Smiles4Giles fundraising page for Wessex Heartbeat.

On 1st October 2008, 14 year old Chris Giles was taking part in a regular training session at his local Fareham Heathens rugby club when he walked off the pitch and suddenly collapsed.   He was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of QA Hospital but unfortunately never regained consciousness.

Chris was an outstanding player in the Fareham Heathens Rugby club under 15 squad.   He had played with the squad since its inception and approached his position as front row forward with unquestionable commitment.

Chris was a much loved player and member of the club who always had a smile on his face and approached everything he faced with enormous enthusiasm.    Chris' infectious grin always cheered everyone up.  He will be sorely missed by all at the club.

Messages were sent from Rugby clubs around the country with a call for 'Smiles4Giles' to raise charity donations for a good cause.

Following news of his death many of his friends at school left 'Smiles4Giles' messages on a memory board at Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green, Hampshire.

A Smiles4Giles memorial rugby match was held on Friday 14 November at Brookfield Community School.    Over £800 was raised at the rugby match and by volunteers from the local Warsash sea scout troop.   A memorial plaque designed by the school children has been unveiled and now hangs in the newly refurbished sports hall.

Pupils of Brookfield school were amazing as they performed The School of Rock musical to raise money as a tribute to Chris.   The spectacular shows were an adaptation of the West End hit We Will Rock You and saw the 163-strong cast blast out classics such as Bohemiam Rhapsody and A Kind of Magic over four nights in November.

Saturday 20th December saw the annual Warsash Wasps SFC Saturday vs. Sunday Managers Charity Match.  This year the managers charity game raised £388 in memory of Chris, a former Wasps player.   Thank you for your support.
