Family Volunteering Trip at the end of March 2023
Eight years after getting to know about the work of the “Harambee for Kenya” charity, we’re off to work for a week as volunteers at its Nyakoe safe house in Kisii, south western Kenya, and are raising money for essential projects and items.
Harambee is Swahili for “all pull together” and the charity supports the local community in caring for vulnerable street children. Thousands of Kenyan children live on the streets after being orphaned by diseases or because their parents are abusive or unable to care for them. Harambee for Kenya currently provides two safe houses, with the vision of moving children from the streets to a place of safety where they can rest and receive food, medical help and education.
In 2014 the charity Harambee for Kenya went to talk to Monty’s Cub group and we gained further insight into its work through Monty making a pen friend called Bernard who lived at Nyakoe.
We are aiming to raise £1,200 as a family for projects and essential items for the safe house. I liked the fact we will be involved in how the money gets spent. Once there we will get involved in the maintenance works around the home for example, painting and repairing clothes and also spend time playing and reading with the pre-school children.
