The National Literacy Trust aims to create a society in which everyone has the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that they need to fulfil their own and, ultimately, the nation’s potential.

Story

Team Snow and Sleddy (Rosie, Jerome, Charlie, Alex and Georgia) are raising money for National Literacy Trust, an independent charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life.

What are we doing?

We are embarking on The Arctic Challenge – an inspiring wilderness endurance test which incorporates a 35km dog sled race, 25km Nordic Ski, Ice Fishing, Orienteering and woodland fire lighting. As a team, we are aiming to raise £8000 (or more!) for the National Literacy Trust.

Where does the challenge take place?

We are heading to the heart of Arctic Lapland - a land of vast wilderness, frozen lakes and rivers, herds of reindeer, snow dusted tundra and endless Boreal Forest. Ice and snow are the norm for many months of the year and the dog and ski are still essential for everyday use during the long winters. Here, just north of Kiruna and 150 kms into the Arctic Circle is where the Arctic Challenge is held.

What does the charity do?

National Literacy Trust is an independent charity working with schools and communities to give disadvantaged children the literacy skills to succeed in life.

They work to improve the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the UK's most disadvantaged communities, where one in three people have low levels of literacy.

Their research shows that during the initial school closures during the pandemic in 2020, 3 in 5 children and young people said that reading made them feel better. 3 in 10 said that reading helped them when they felt sad that they could not see their family and friends.

Their impact last year:

•    Supported the literacy of 700,000 children who were out of school and couldn't access digital learning

•    Distributed 575,643 books, magazines and writing resources during lockdown

•    Had over 1m unique visitors to our family-focussed Words for Life site

•    Worked with 6,492 schools, supporting their efforts to re-engage and inspire learners.
