Our intrepid trekkers are taking on a once in a lifetime trek to discover the incredible High Atlas Mountains that will help us to defeat meningitis by 2030.

Story

The Challenge

On 7 September 2021, I will be travelling to Morocco to attempt to reach the summit of Mount Toubkal, the tallest  mountain in North Africa. The six day trek will take us 4,167m above sea level and will, hands down, be the toughest challenge I have ever done!

I did climb Snowdon a few years back but something tells me that this mountain is going to be a lot harder to tackle...!

I am excited and proud to take on this challenge and am ready to spend the next few months physically and mentally preparing myself for the challenge!

The Charity

Meningitis Research Foundation are at the heart of the initiative that is working with the World Health Organisation and leading experts on the disease to tackle meningitis globally. They are creating a roadmap that if adopted by the World Health Organisation in 2020 will help to save lives across the world and help to stop families from experiencing this life changing disease. I really appreciate your support.

Meningitis and septicaemia are serious, life threatening illnesses.

Meningitis is the swelling of the meninges, which is the lining around the brain and spinal cord, caused mainly by germs entering the body.

Septicaemia is blood poisoning caused by the same germs that can cause meningitis.

Meningitis and septicaemia are illnesses that can kill in hoursAnyone, anywhere of any age can get meningitis and septicaemia.

Although some people survive and recover with no lasting effects, many are not so fortunate. The after-effects left by these diseases last a life-time; physically and emotionally.

So why am I doing it?

I was made aware of this challenge through a friend, who is the South West Ambassador fo the Meningitis Research Foundation. A simple email offering the “opportunity of a lifetime” caught my attention and here we are!

I’ve never done a charity event before, let alone trek 6 days up the highest mountain in North Africa! Although I have no personal experience of the devastating effect of meningitis, I know that the Meningitis Research Foundation is an incredible charity and I am excited and proud to be doing my part to help raise enough funds to defeat the disease by 2030!

So what can you do?

I am kindly asking you for your help and support to reach my fundraising target of £1,600. Please dig deep and help donate toward this amazing cause and to help Meningitis Research Foundation eradicate this disease once and for all.

No family should have to experience the loss of a loved one through this awful disease so please, any contribution you can offer, will help us move that one step closer to defeating meningitis within the next 10 years!

Thank you,

Sophie
