I will be taking part in the GBSS Marathon in a Month. This is a charity working to stop Group B Strep in babies. Group B Strep can be found in 20-40% of women. There is a simple GBS specific test which can be conducted in later pregnancy, however this is not offered on the NHS. I ordered a testing KIT myself however due to complications at my one of my last midwife appointments I completely forgot to complete the test, and when I remembered it was too late. Thankfully I did not carry GBS however this is something which I always regret about the end of my pregnancy. One of the aims of this charity is for all pregnant women to be offered this test as part of their routine antenatal care. This is something I strongly believe in. If you test positive you are usually put on a course of antibiotics in labour to minimise the risk of infection in your newborn, however if it goes undetected your baby can get an infection where they could become seriously ill.
