Story

On Tuesday night on 18th June we called an ambulance.  Paramedics worked hard to save Sophie's life at our home and took her to Royal Blackburn Hospital.  She was admitted through the emergency department into Critical Care where a succession of the most dedicated and caring nurses continued saving Sophie's life hour by hour and then again after emergency surgery.  Over the days/weeks that followed Sophie awoke over a period of days from an induced coma and dealt with a diagnosis of inoperable cancer, further surgery and later the news that there was no treatment at all with a dignity and bravery that will come as no surprise to anyone who knew her.  Sophie's last days were made as comfortable and happy as possible by the nurses on Ward C18 whose professionalism and humanity reinforces my own faith in just how good human beings can be.  We were given the chance to make peace with the fact that our life together would end so much sooner than either of us had expected.  Sophie was able to pass away peacefully in her sleep after taking the priceless opportunities to talk with her family and friends over the days that remained available to her.  So why give to this charity?  Facilities in the hospital like "the Retreat" room on the ward are funded through this charity.  It provides both sanctuary and a bubble of normality for both patients and visitors.  I can tell you that this apparently small thing can make a huge difference.  Sophie asked me to  nominate this charity to you for donations in place of flowers.  If you weren't thinking of sending flowers why not make a donation anyway?  Please help Sophie show her thanks and love to the incredible paramedics, doctors, nurses, HCAs, nutritionists, both surgeons, paliative care consultant, physiotherapists and administrators who took such great care of her and our family up to and after Sophie's passing on 7th July.  Thank you so much.
