Nine University of Bristol alumni, staff and students are running the 2022 London Marathon in support of Healthy Minds; a student mental health support programme that harnesses the power of exercise.

Story

After running my first Half Marathon last year, I'm now signed up for both a Half Marathon and the London Marathon this year (because I can't say no to a challenge...)

I wanted to run to support the University of Bristol Healthy Minds program because as someone who has made extensive use of the mental health support services at the University, I want to make sure the program receives funding for future students to get the support they need. 1 in 4 people will suffer with a mental health problem a shoe point in their life, and the stress of University can exacerbate this - 37% of first year students reported deteriorating mental health in an ONS survey. Moderate exercise can help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety and, in conjunction with other therapies, help those suffering from poor mental health.

One of my own biggest barriers to improving my mental health was the lack of a routine, a lack of motivation, and knowing I felt a bit better when I exercised but not having the means to access University facilities. The Healthy Minds program provided me with three months of structured workouts, facility access, and a fantastic Personal Trainer who acted as a mentor throughout. I've now come to the end of the program, and taking the habits I've formed I now get to train for the most famous Marathon race in the world.

Please consider donating, even just £1 - every little really will help. And confidential support is always available for those who need it (https://www.mind.org.uk or https://www.samaritans.org)
