Story
In response to the war in Ukraine, my school is raising money to assist children and teens who are victims of conflict. This is an opportunity for us as students to lead the way in helping kids who are wounded - physically and mentally - because of war. These include students who, right now, should be in school just like us. However, unlike us, war injured children are often tragically excluded from education due to physical disability or social exclusion as a result of injury or trauma. On top of that, they carry the additional burden of being displaced refugees.
We are fundraising online leading up to Southbank Westminster International Night 2022, an event that historically celebrates our international community. What is best about our community is our ability to do collective good through Service as Action. Whether you're a student at Southbank, a parent or carer, family member, or friend of ours, JOIN US!
Our chosen charity, INARA (the International Network for Aid, Relief, and Assistance), provides life-saving and life-altering medical care for children from conflict areas who have catastrophic but reversible injuries, and who are unable to access medical treatment due to war. INARA steps in to fill the gaps in access to medical care when not provided by other institutions or non-profits. INARA does not compete with but rather complements pre-existing medical programs by building partnerships and networks to secure reduced or pro bono care and provide financial coverage when needed.
Additionally, INARA has a wealth of experience dealing with conflict related paediatric mental trauma. While there has been an extraordinary effort to provide emergency supplies, what is also needed is mental health support for children. INARA will be working to facilitate the efforts of small NGOs in neighbouring countries who are focusing on vulnerable children, such as orphans. These NGOs are not equipped to host the influx of children nor do they have the mechanisms in place to accept international donations.
INARA's initial operation was based out of Beirut, Lebanon. Their experience in Lebanon acted as the operational blueprint for their expansion into other countries such as Syria, fully recognising differing needs and gaps where they have adjusted their response accordingly. INARA has now expanded paediatric aid to Ukraine.
By providing treatment INARA changes a child’s narrative from being defined by violence and their injury, to one of kindness and compassion. By donating to INARA, YOU are helping to restore a child's future.
