Luke had a moment of madness and considered what we could do to raise money for our chosen charity, the Samaritans. And of course he came up with the completely sensible idea of a continuous 100km walk. Starting at 0900 Saturday Morning and continuing into Sunday until completion. He then managed to convince myself (Donna) and Jez to join him. With no training whatsoever just relying on mind over matter to complete the task.
We wanted to do something memorable, challenging and ultimately rewarding, whilst also raising awareness about the fabulous work the Samaritans do in supporting vulnerable people with various mental health issues.
In fact The Samaritans conducted a recent survey, highlighting that two in five (41%) men in England, Scotland and Wales aged 20-59 do not seek support when they need to, because they prefer to solve their own problems. Our team know this from their own personal experiences and we wanted to share this message too.
In our line of work, we often come across vulnerable people on our rail network, many of whom sadly want to end their lives. Having the support of the Samaritans in terms of the training they provide, allows our Officers to be as prepared as they can be when dealing with challenging situations and to potentially save lives.
The London to Brighton 100km continuous walk challenge is one of the toughest challenges in the UK and we are determined to complete it within 20 hours. We start at 0900 on Saturday 29th May 2021 and will walk 100km and 1500m of climb until we finish at some point during Sunday the 30th May 2021.
