We connect, train and equip educational 'catalysts' to drive community-led change, through the creation and local management of 42 inclusive and sustainable education centres.

Story

In the months ahead, we hope to raise enough money to provide solar power for all of our 'Reading Spots' - of which there are now nearly 12. This is to enable communities to read and study at night with free light to maximise use of the space and resources.

It costs about £500 to install solar power for lights in each library. The amazing team at Stumble Inn in Elmina have offered to install all the solar panels for free across the country - we just need to fund the equipment itself (solar panel, battery, box, bulbs, wires).

Through our projects we aim to provide a community-led space for books and educational resources to be shared by all members of the community, also creating a safe space for children to learn outside school hours.

This solar power project will have multiple benefits:

  • It will enable the community to have free lights to study and read by in the evenings. This will mean that communities will not have to find funds to pay for electricity which has been an ongoing issue.
  • It will enable the community to have a source of light during frequent periods of 'lights out'.
  • It will enable students and adults to have a quiet place to study in the evening with lights.
  • We will have information in all the libraries about the science behind solar power, and details of how to install and maintain solar panels.
  • We hope that it will therefore encourage others in the communities to use sustainable sources of energy.

The communities could not be more keen to have solar-powered lights, with some Senior High students in Akumadan even placing pressure on local governments last week by going on the radio to request them to fund electricity. We all agree that solar power is the best path forward.

We cannot thank you enough for your support!
