Sir Robert McAlpine's 150th year anniversary trek to Rannoch Moor · 10 May 2019
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
2019 is a special year for Sir Robert McAlpine as we celebrate our 150th year anniversary. As part of our ongoing celebrations this year, we have organised a trek across Rannoch Moor in the Scottish Highlands to retrace the route taken by our founder during an 1889 expedition to survey the course of the proposed West Highland Railway.
That original journey has gone down in company folklore after Robert and his party of six encountered horrendous weather conditions which tested them to the limits. Thankfully, all survived to tell the tale.
The trek takes place along a route from Rannoch Moor to Loch Tulla (near Bridge of Orchy). The walkers will cover 18 miles on the first day and 27 miles on the second, across a landscape that is little changed since Robert’s day.
We've invited everyone to join from across the company and have over 70 people signed up thus far!
The Rannoch Moor Walk is taking place on the following dates:
- 10th/11th May
- 16th/17th May
- 31st May/1st June
The route runs through very variable and scenic country, crossing the vast, legendary and lonely Rannoch Moor from north to south. Walkers will wind their way along old drovers’ trails, paths, high passes, some old stone tracks and sections of open moor, including a river crossing.
Peat hags and boggy sections of ground and umpteen small streams and other minor obstacles will be negotiated on the way; not forgetting, of course, whatever the weather may bring on the 400-500m high moor!
The trek will also provide the opportunity to visit places few others go and passes the old lodge at Loch Treig where the 1889 group stayed on their first night, as well as the cottage where many of those rescued from the moor were taken.
The trip combines adventure, history, challenge, folklore, wildlife, engineering, great scenery, good company, team work and we hope you can support through sponsorship.
All funds raised will go directly to Maggie's.
Thank you in advance for your support.
