Munich Marathon Team Relay · 8 October 2017

The Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity raises funds to support families living in the UK, Northern Ireland and Ireland who have children with Congenital Hyperinsulinism (CHI), a rare disorder affecting approx 1:50,000 in the UK. We will hold conferences to support each other and meet other families living with CHI which is so important. These conferences will also include education sessions presented by experienced families and medical professionals. We will also support research into different aspects of CHI including genetics, blood glucose, new medication and repurposed medication. Thank you for supporting The Children's Hyperinsulinism Charity (CHC).

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Earlier this year a group of Mum's at Gt George's School, Munich decided to set a challenge to get fit by running a team relay. None of us are runners, most of us are not as fit as we would like, but we all share a goal to raise awareness and funds for the children's hyperinsulinism charity,

Emilio is a kind, generous, funny,  young boy who attends St George's School, Munich. He was born with a rare condition, known as hyperinsulinism.  It is a life threatening illness if not diagnosed and treated quickly.  He was diagnosed at 11 weeks old, by which time the disease had already affected his pancreas, and medical staff were unable to say if the disease had already affected his brain development.

Most cases are congenital but in Emilio's case this was not so, which has made it all the more difficult to treat him effectively, as he doesn't follow the rules. He has and will always be a test case for doctors to learn from.  Emilio is monitored on a daily basis, to ensure he stays healthy and strong.

Simple everyday tasks are made more difficult by his condition. His fingertips are desensitised due to prick tests which make fine motor skills tricky. His medications have side effects such as excessive hair growth, water retention and stunted growth.  All things which can make life as an 8 year old hard work. He will always be subject to unpleasant drugs being administered to keep him as healthy as possible.

Emilio is a regular in-patient at Great Ormond Street where he undergoes ongoing tests to manage his illness but also to give the team a chance to observe, monitor and develop new solutions, to help in the management of future children's care.

So finally, Cristina, Trish, Jo, Claire C, Claire G, Amanda, Natalie, Karen, Katherine, Anna,, Susann and Zoe, Lisa, and Rachel hope you will support us in this very personal challenge.

Every penny, cent, euro, pound donation can and will make a difference.
