London Landmarks Half Marathon 2024 · 7 April 2024 ·

This is not your average half marathon! From cultural landmarks, to the city's quirky and hidden secrets, runners get to explore the capital on a route like no other.

Story

On 7th April 2024 I’ll be running 13 miles/21km in the London Landmarks Half Marathon for Mind Mental Health Charity. I’m running on behalf of my sister’s beautiful mother-in-law who sadly lost her battle with her mental health April last year.

Mind is a charity that means a lot to me as somebody who has had their own difficulties with mental health. For me, when I graduated university, I felt I was left to my own devices and thrown into the real world without any form of direction. There was this sudden immense pressure to have my life sorted, to know what I wanted to do, and I wasn’t prepared for it.

As well as this, there was COVID and the lockdowns. We were constantly updated on the rise of covid deaths, stories being shown of people who couldn’t see dying loved ones, and only being allowed to leave the house once a day for a walk. Everything seemed to be happening all at once, and it became so overwhelming and upsetting.

Having noticed changes in how I was feeling, I took the route we all remind each other to take - to talk to loved ones. Through honest and transparent conversations with friends and family, I felt reassured and reminded that I wasn’t alone, and that these feelings are completely normal, relatable and increasingly common amongst so many people.

With the help of organisations (including Mind), people are able to better understand what they are going through and can learn about helpful coping mechanisms, which we can all find useful in our day to day lives.

I’m running in the hope that my contribution and the donations raised will go towards projects that aim to reduce the stigma of mental health. Often because of misconceptions about mental health and well-being, people struggle to open up and seek a support network, meaning they then suffer in silence and their conditions go untreated.

Mind is a charity that puts mental health at the forefront. They promote understanding surrounding different mental health difficulties, and provide invaluable information as well as a range of services to help, comfort and empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem.

As someone who has never been an endurance runner, It’s going to be tough, but I’m lucky to be doing it alongside my sister who will help push me through it.

Thanks a lot for giving my page a read. According to Mind, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year in England. Every donation is appreciated and is a step closer to ensuring that everyone going through something receives the support, guidance, advice and treatment they deserve.

My thoughts are with anyone who is struggling with or has lost somebody due to their mental health. If you have something troubling you, please talk to loved ones, contact helplines such as Samaritans 116 123 who are free to call and are available to talk to and listen any time of day or night, or in an emergency call 999 or go to A&E.

Be kind to yourself and be there for others,

Stella 🦋
