Step by Step School is an independent specialist provision for children with a primary diagnosis of autism. It was set up 16 years ago by a small group of determined and tenacious parents to secure an education provision that would meet their children's complex needs.

The founding families' children occupied one small building (a converted barn) and, over the years, as the school has continued to grow, more space has been needed. Some of it has been provided by temporary portakabins. It is now time to replace these with a permanent building structure which will not only meet the current needs of the children but will also add facilities for developing daily living and social skills.

The current parents are keen to support fundraising towards this exciting project and have devised the idea of a Children's Journey jointly with the school.

The challenge is to get the Step by Step pupils to travel "virtually" from John O'Groats (in Scotland) to Land's End (in Cornwall) and from then on to Step by Step School in East Grinstead. This is a journey of 1186 miles and they are hoping to raise a minimum of £6000 in 6 months, starting on 31st January 2020.

The children will contribute towards this mileage during their school day and even out of school hours, by whichever preferred means of exercise they'd like to: from walking to bouncing, dancing, swimming, running, cycling, rock climbing, zip-wiring, horse riding or whatever else wonderful staff or parents can come up with to suit each child's abilities. All distances will be recorded and added towards the targeted mileage. 

It may seem a straightforward challenge to some, but for these children this is incredibly demanding and we are proud that they will be trying their hardest to achieve the target, by whatever means of physical activity they can, supported, as ever, by the wonderful, hard working Step by Step School staff.
