Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I am attempting to run Bristol's 10k in May 2014, to raise money for a charity that is very close to my heart. The charity I am running for is St. Peter's Hospice, the charity works very hard and cares wonderfully for patients and families who are affected by a loved one by an incurable illness.
Unfortunately in May 2013 my dear Grandad was diagnosed with Asbestos Lung Cancer, also known as Mesothelioma. This came as a big shock to us all, as my Grandad was a fit and healthy man who still was working at the age of 79!! And enjoyed this thoroughly! (This gene was not passed down to me I have to admit ha!) As each month passed Grandad's battle with Cancer was slowly taking an impact and was very hard to watch him suffer in such a horrible way.
November 2013 was a difficult month for me and my family, as this was when Grandad's health deteriorated. As a family we felt Grandad needed the extra care and attention that we wasn’t able to provide no longer, so this was where St. Peters Hospice stepped in. The hospice was a lovely and friendly place from day one, there wasn’t a single thing they wouldn’t do to help Grandad or us as his family, and that I am forever grateful for. They did everything for Grandad and made his stay at the hospice, just that extra bit comforting at such a difficult time for him.
Sadly, Grandad passed away on 24 November 2013. That day was truly the hardest day of my life so far, but I know now he’s no longer in pain and discomfort. I am pleased that Grandad passed away in such a caring place, and that he was at ease near the end of his life, with the great assistance of the nurses at the hospice who provided the correct medication for Grandad’s pain.
St. Peters Hospice is a wonderful place, and a place that will always remain close to my heart. I want to complete the 10k run and raise some money to show my appreciation for all the hard work and care they gave my Grandad and family. Without the help of the hospice staff, Grandad’s last couple of months would have been a different picture.
I know that money can be sore subject for us all at any time of year, but I would highly be grateful if you could donate any amount of money and help me raise money for my chosen charity.
I promise I will work out and go for regular runs, for all who know me probably know I’m quite lazy and need motivating often haha! So this will be a challenge for me, so wish me luck (I’ll need it after all).
A big thank-you for taking the time to read this story about my Grandad xxx
