VSO ICS** · 31 January 2020 to 31 December 2020 ·

VSO is an international development organisation that brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all. Everyday, VSO volunteers are working to empower people living in some of the world’s most marginalised communities.

Story

What am I doing exactly?!

At the end of February I will be volunteering for almost three months on a development programme in Cambodia. This is part of International Citizenship Service which brings people together to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most. I’ll be working alongside volunteers from Cambodia to bring together young people of all backgrounds to help these overseas communities. Our main focus will be on their Education system, particularly in the Youth Department, and local high school authorities. The aim of educating the community is to help guide them to find control of their own safety and sustainability. ICS works with communities that have specifically requested their help. It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active citizens who are passionate about long term community development.

This is a UK Government Funded Programme which means there is no charge unlike many charity organisations. In return ICS have asked that I show my commitment by fundraising a grand total of £800 or more by Monday 8th February. This money will go directly into the pockets of the charity itself. I truly believe in the work of VSO ICS and their ability to create positive change on a global scale. It is not like the other volunteering schemes I have come across before where the focus isn’t primarily on standing to help fight poverty and the rights of others.

To validate my commitment I shall be holding various fundraising events over the next month. I’ll be doing anything in my capability from holding cake sales and raffles to setting myself various challenges. This January I am taking part in ‘dry Jan’ where I will be sticking to fruit juice instead of the usual G&T. Even if you donate £1 you will really help raise the money to fund VSO ICS who are working with these overseas communities to make long- term change.
