Story

Borders Forest Trust celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2021. Over the last 25 years we have been reviving the Wild Heart of Southern Scotland by planting 2 million trees, restoring peatlands and lost habitats, and helping nature regenerate an area covering 31 square km. Our symbol of hope, the Survivor Tree, is UK Tree of the Year 2020. This lonely tree that survived against the odds has inspired us to plant saplings of many different native trees over the hills where it stands. This is just the beginning of our long term commitment to the ecological restoration of the Wild Heart of Southern Scotland. The South of Scotland has the lowest coverage of native trees anywhere in Scotland and we need your help to ensure these trees continue to thrive and even more native trees are planted with them.

I'm going to knit 25 nature themed hats - expect lots of trees and possibly owls and other creatures.  This a bit of a personal challenge for me after a very long break from knitting (30 years).  I've never knitted with circular pins so I expect to make a slow start but hopefully it will get easier.  I'm using up a pile of wool sitting in my loft that was my mother's - she used to work in the Co-op Wool Shop in Galashiels.  So my knitting challenge will be very environmentally friendly.

And yes the hats will be available, for a minimum donation of £25 (just don't tick the Gift Aid box if you want a hat because if you receive something in return for your donation its not eligible for Gift Aid).  I'll be posting pictures on my social media of the hats as I get them knitted.  If you fancy joining in just send drop me a message, the more hats, the more trees we can plant.
