I'm raising money once again for Surfers Not Street Children.
This time I am doing the Big Property Swim across Dorney Lake - a total of 2.5km, on Friday 4th July. As I work in the industry and I'm a keen swimmer I thought it an appropriate challenge to take on. Ventia will match fund any donations made.
We have been journeying with Surfers Not Street Children since they started and we know the founder Tom Hewitt very well, and have got to know the boys (ex street children) very well over the last 2 years. They have been to the UK and stayed with us last year. We are a UK partner and funder. We are currently part way through refurbishing the surf house which we successfully fund raised for last year. A local (Devon) carpenter and friend Martin is currently spending a few months in Durban working on the house for which we are really grateful.
This year Tom visited Freetown in Sierra Leone and is planning another trip with one or tow of the boys to launch a surfing program around an existing street child project there, replicating how the project started in Durban. We need to raise funds to make this happen.
In March one of the boys, Ntando, was chosen to surf for South Africa in the World Games which is amazing and a real testimony to his surf talent. In April Sihle was asked by O'Neil to make a film with Jordy Smith (the best surfer to come out of South Africa - also from Durban) all about the Surfers Not Street Children project which was amazing exposure for both Sihle and the project.
So things are going from strength to strength but we still need financial support to take things forward as we continue to establish the work of the charity.
