Summer 2017 challenges · 28 May 2017

We are a charity working to promote and provide community led welcome for displaced people. Our aim is to provide the type of friendship and practical support that anyone would hope to have if they were forced, under such circumstances, to start over in a new and unfamiliar place.

Story

This Summer I am taking on a series of challenges to raise money to support a Syrian refugee family coming to Georgeham, North Devon, where I live. I am part of the sponsoring community group and we need to raise at least £9,000 to support them as part of our participation in the scheme. We anticipate the family will arrive in Autumn 2017.

I undertake quite a few sporting activities and this Summer I have so far taken on a SwimRun on the island of Uto, South East of Stockholm in Sweden. This was a 42km paired race including 37km of running and 5km of swimming in the Baltic, broken up in to 19 swim sections and 21 running sections. This took place this Sunday 28th May.

Then In June I cylcled from South Wales (Swansea) to North Wales (Colwyn Bay) over 3 days - total distance of 210 miles. We took in the Brecon Beacons and Snowdonia. This took place on 12th - 14th June.

On 2nd July I took part in the Croyde Ocean Triathlon - longer than an Olympic triathlon , and a challenging course with a 1.5km sea swim to start followed by the cycle (40km) and run (12km) sections, taking in plenty of Devon hills! I completed the course in 2 hours 51 minutes which I was quite pleased with.

Then finally a group of us will be taking part in the Exmoor Swim at Wimbleball Lake. This is a 4km open water swim - the distance between Turkey and Greece that many refugees take as part of their passage to Europe.

As a group we are trying to clock up some 3500 miles, the distance from where I am based in North Devon to Syria. These challenges are part of my effort towards this group target.
