Stephen Kingshott Charity Walk for Prostate Cancer · 31 May 2025 ·

Prostate Cancer UK has a simple ambition - to stop men dying from prostate cancer. Through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and support, we will stop prostate cancer being a killer.

Story

In the summer of 2024 whilst feeling the fittest and healthiest I had ever felt at the age of 62 I had a routine blood test and requested they check my PSA levels at the same time. The results showed a raised PSA which the doctor was unhappy with, I was referred to Urology for an MRI scan and check-up.

I should point out I had no symptoms at all so there was nothing to ring alarm bells with me that anything might be wrong. The MRI revealed an area on my prostate the urologist did not like the look of so I was booked in for biopsies. I was still convinced there was nothing wrong and the hospital were being over cautious. It turns out that my biopsies were cancerous and I was then booked in for brachytherapy treatment which was done in October 2024.

I will be monitored by the brachytherapy team for 5 years and have regular blood tests to check my PSA level is reducing. The treatment I had is curative and will kill the cancer cells.

During this journey I have been surprised at the apathy shown by many men who simply dismiss my suggestions they should have a check-up. The usual comment is 'there is nothing wrong with me I feel fine'. Well so did I and in fact still I exhibit no symptoms whatsoever.

Please just go and request a PSA blood test or at least have a check-up at your local GP.

If nothing else I hope that organising this charity walk on behalf of Prostate Cancer UK Ltd to raise awareness of this disease
