The Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation & Development is a small charity based in Eccleston just outside Chester.

Their work helps individuals with many different conditions such as autism, learning difficulty, developmental delay and strokes.

We wanted to complete this sponsored cycle on behalf of B.I.R.D as a thank you for the excellent help and support that we received for Flynn. At 5 years old, Flynn was non-verbal and displaying clear signs of a developmental disorder. Locally, all doors seemed to be closing on Flynn - he was being taught sign language and there were no goals for his speech. We were not satisfied with simply having a "diagnosis" therefore we sought external help for his condition.

B.I.R.D gave hope and a positive outlook to assist in promoting his development. Flynn embarked on a 3 year exercise programme specifically tailored to his needs. The results started to show in a matter of months and at the end of the programme marked improvements were shown in Flynn's speech, independence, co-ordination and confidence, among many others.

Flynn still faces a lot of challenges and he continues to work hard to try and overcome these, however without the input from B.I.R.D building those developmental foundations, we are certain that Flynn would have found even the simplest of tasks very difficult or impossible.

Something as simple as riding a bike is a major achievement and is now something that we enjoy on our weekly cycles together!

Flynn, alongside his Dad and Grandad, plan to complete the 50km cycle over 2 days. Day 1 Fort William to Laggan Locks, Day 2 Laggan Locks to Fort Augustus.
