Hi! Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Over the past few months I have walked, run, shaved off my hair and jumped out of a plane to raise money to take part in an expedition to Borneo with the charity Raleigh to carry out work that will help local communities and the environment in Borneo.
Thank You to everyone who sponsored me and helped me reach my target! The support has been overwhelming! I raised over £800 and the surplus money will be donated to Help The Heroes.
You can follow the progress of the expedition I will be going on in July by following the blog on the Raleigh website here
Raleigh is a charity that organises expeditions for people from all walks of life to develop new skills, friendships and make real differences to communities and environments across the world. It is a requirement to raise £800 in order to take part in the project but I will be paying for my flights, kit and vaccinations myself. Money I raise will go directly to Raleigh so they can continue to run expeditions and projects around the world.
On March 7th I'll be taking part in a 16 mile hike in Buckinghamshire - successfully completed!!
On March 27th I'll be hiking 26 miles in Leicestershire - successfully completed!!
On May 19th I'll be jumping from 13,000 feet out of an airplane, along with my 60 year old mother! - succesfully completed!!
On April 24th I'll be running (staggering) 5K in London - successfully completed!!
And I'll be shaving off my dreadlocked hair after over 2 years of uncut growth! - completed...with much sadness
More about why I did this...
In July I'll be heading to the Malaysian state of Sabah on the island of Borneo in South East Asia. Once there I'll be spending 10 weeks with Raleigh working on sustainable community and environment projects that will help local communities and the environment in Borneo. There's also an adventure challenge phase where I'll be tested to my limits physicaly and mentally.
Sabah is the poorest of the Malaysian states with a significant proportion of the population living below the poverty line. Raleigh works with local partner organisations to ensure all their projects are worthwhile, appropriate and sustainable.
Some previous examples of Raleigh projects in Borneo have included:
Construction of community halls and kindergartens, sustainable eco-tourism facilities and building gravity water feed systems that provide clean, drinkable water to remote communities.
Construction of bird hides in Likas Bird Sanctuary, rainforest reforestation projects and construction of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre.
But Raleigh is not a holiday – it’s lots of physical manual work, very basic living accommodation and food, and there is a strict no alcohol policy!!
