Story
In 1972 a group of Licensed Taxi-Drivers arranged to take some Disabled children to the seaside. It took a year to arrange this trip but by the following summer 36 brightly decorated Taxis left from Crispen House Bermondsey in convoy to Margate, 72 children attended that day, the aim being to bring some fun and joy into the lives of the children and that outing certainly did.
The day proved such a success it was decided to make this an annual event.
Initial meetings were held at the Petrol Station in the Walworth Road and later to premises in the Albany Road thus giving the charity it’s name.
More drivers wanted to join in and we now take many children and adults from various homes in South East London in an amazing convoy of over 120 plus Taxi-cabs
In 1992 our first trip to Hastings was organised by Bob Baylis, Gina Sexton and George Payne. The 1066 L.V.A. publicans (who raise funds at their pubs throughout the year ) now sponsor this event, and this is now the second largest of our outings.
In 2004 our Secretary had a letter from a charity that caters for the needs of children from Chernobyl Russia who visit England, they would love to visit the seaside, the Herne Bay Catholic Club offered to sponsor the whole day so this has become our third major trip and with the help of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade , T and J Breakdown Services and the Metropolitan , Kent and Sussex Police and the Metropolitan Police Cadets all helping to making these days a spectacular occasion.
All these outings are attended by our Licensed Taxi-Drivers not only from London but also from the suburbs, they supply themselves and their Taxi free of charge and are always on hand to help Special Needs children.
We now give money to schools and homes to purchase things from wheelchairs to hand bells in fact any thing that the local councils cannot supply so should you require any further information about us or if you should know of a child that needs our help please do not be afraid to contact us.
