100km in 5 Days - Camino Portugues · 15 May 2023

Self Help Africa helps people in rural Africa grow enough food to feed themselves, earn a living, and access basic services. Self Help Africa equips people with the skills they need to move out of poverty by training farmers in new techniques and teaching basic business skills.

Story

I enjoy a gentle stroll, preferably one that starts or finishes at a coffee shop. I love the fresh air & the beauty of nature - but hiking is a whole new world to me!

The furthest I've ever walked in one day is 18 miles (for a charity event) and I was a broken woman by the end of it - my feet needed a week to recover....

But there's no recovery time during this challenge - I'll be joining team Self Help Africa for a whole week of walking along the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Together, we'll be covering the last 100km of the Camino Portugues from Tui to Santiago de Compostela - that's 63 miles in 5 days.

Whether walking the Camino for religious or spiritual reasons, or to discover its natural beauty and heritage, it's a unique experience that inspires many, and attracts visitors from all over the globe. I've heard so many magical things about it, that I'm really excited to take part, but equally daunted by the challenge ahead.

To put that into perspective, 63 miles is just shy of 2.5 marathons (across consecutive days) and about 130,000 steps!

  • Day 1 - 15miles
  • Day 2 - 7.5 miles
  • Day 3 - 14 miles
  • Day 4 - 11 miles
  • Day 5 - 15.5 miles

I've bought Cod Liver Oil tablets for the niggly knee injury I recently picked up (getting old!!) and have booked in some long training walks with friends, over the coming months.

We're doing this to raise funds for Self Help Africa. I've seen first-hand how their support changes the lives rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa - something a simple as good quality seed, chicks or livestock,  can enable a family to become more food secure and resilient to climate change, enabling them to pay school fees, buy medicines and build a home - it's truly life-changing.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity. So it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
