Burhnham Beeches Half Marathon · 18 August 2013
Diagnosed with Advanced Metastatic Prostate Cancer. Mind in overdrive. Sulk. Eat. Grumpy. Expand to a lumpy 19st 10lb. Badgered by those who (really) care for me, I joined The Fitness Centre in Halton Village. Personal trainer Helen Mulhall, a long distance runner with a sense of humour and (my friends tell me, a voice to die for) gets me running. The only regret is that she wasn’t into mud wrestling: it would have been so much easier and more interesting (and, questionably, more rewarding).
Sixteen months of chiselling and the lump chiselled is now a sort of athlete. The cost? Almost 6 stone of hard earned chubbiness. Along the journey Elaine MacWhirter, Physiotherapist and Pilates specialist, has – notwithstanding the best efforts of my other “friends” - managed to keep me almost trouble free.
Helen is leading The Frantic Five for this half marathon. The rest of the team include my son Simon (who probably joining us to make sure that he can keep an eye on me), my great friend from the City John Frederick and last, but not least, my dear friend, who forced me to go to the gym, Martin Elmey. Many thanks to Pai Skincare for sponsoring our running gear and for the work they are doing for cancer patients.
Sadly John Frederick had to pull out of the run because of injury but with only two weeks notice another dear friend David Fitchett stepped up to take his place. John has still continued his amazing support
Finally, I have to thank Wexham Park Hospital who managed to give me the bad news and support me extremely well. Even though their timekeeping was a bit dodgy at times, I have to say that the NHS gets some bad publicity occasionally, but they have been brilliant and some of the money raised will go to : Wexham Park Urology Fund. This has been agreed with our lead charity The Topic of Cancer and we are very excited by what is happening at the University of Surrey. Please read what they have to say and what they do; it's compulsive reading
Many thanks for your support from all of us
Steve
