MLD Support Association UK was set up to bring hope to families in the fight to eradicate Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD). We support families affected by MLD, fund research into therapeutic procedures and, as it is a rare disease, provide information about MLD to ensure early diagnosis.

Story

My charity work is all about keeping poorly children with their families, and this will be a similar mission, following inspiration from the exposure of a local families recent tragic story. I

have chosen to participate in the Great North 10k challenge in aid of MLD. Metachromatic Leukodystrophy, commonly known as MLD, is a genetic disorder that affects the white matter, or myelin, of the brain and the central nervous system.

My charity work is all about keeping poorly children with their families, and this will be a similar effort. Those affected by MLD typically appear healthy until onset, or when an individual experience symptoms of the disease. Onset can vary from the first few weeks or months of life (Early Infantile Onset) into adulthood. According to the NHS, there was previously no treatment available for the brain disorder. However, in February this year, the NHS struck a deal for the gene therapy, which reportedly is the most expensive drug in the world.

I have become inspired to raise awareness and fundraise following exposure of a local family's devastating news surrounding the impact and the many devastating consequences of MLD. Please support me in my endeavours. Full story below
