Birmingham Bikeathon 2018 · 17 June 2018 ·

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

Quick version - full story below

I'm cycling 26 miles to raise money for Bloodwise. My uncle has leukaemia. My uncle, my cousin-in-law and I are all doing the ride. This will be my third time on a bike since I was a teenager #sorecheeks.

My uncle's story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I'm intending to cycle 26 miles for Bloodwise - a charity that funds leukaemia and lymphoma research. The event is on Sunday 17th June starting from Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham. I managed to complete this event last year - and raise over £700 - but I am now a year older and 26 miles still seems a very long way for a 66 year old! Without doubt, your generous contributions would help inspire and motivate me to complete the full 26 miles.

Back in August 2014 I was diagnosed with chronic lymphcytic leukaemia (CLL) as a result of a routine blood test. The realization that I had blood cancer came as a great shock, particularly as I was feeling very well at the time and planning for an enjoyable retirement.

I have discovered that in the  UK  around 1700 people are diagnosed with CLL each year and blood cancer has the 3rd highest mortality taking more lives each year than prostate or breast cancer .

To date I have not needed any treatment  or drugs - and none is
scheduled; I just see my haematology consultant every six months and do my best to eat, drink and live as healthily as practically possible, without the need to have to give up anything that I like; I try to stay positive and exercise through walking, cycling and playing golf.

Bloodwise does great work in raising awareness of, and funding for, research into leukaemia and I’m asking you to help me support their work by cycling 26 miles on Sunday 17th June in the Wiggle Birmingham Bikeathon.

I have chosen £200 as an initial target but would like to raise much more if possible.

Thanks for reading this long message and whatever way you choose to show it, your support will be much appreciated by me and many, many others.

Kind regards

Kevin
