London to Brighton Bike Ride 2018 · 16 September 2018 ·

Since 1969 CPU London has been offering individual and group psychoanalytic psychotherapy to anybody who is concerned about their emotional difficulties and is seeking psychotherapy or looking for advice about which kind of psychological help would be best for them.

Story

All

Having spent the last 20 years ridiculing middle aged cyclists for their tight Lycra, pack mentality, lack of creativity and general smugness (particularly the early Sunday morning smugness), I have agreed to live life on the other side for one day only by cycling to Brighton on 16th September. I did a training run the other day and hated it - physically, emotionally, spiritually, philosophically and emphatically. I was rightfully ridiculed by a number of passing motorists (on one occasion being asked if I was representing ‘team muffin top’ - presumably a jibe at my generous, doughy-middle, accentuated by my appallingly tight top).

The only reason I would put myself (or any on-looking motorist) through such pain is because my wife told me to do it, but with good cause. It’s to raise money for Camden Psychotherapy Unit, which does a tremendous job providing psychotherapy to those who do not otherwise have the means to secure it. The desperate and the needy, who have been at the wrong end of the government’s decision to withdraw NHS funding for longer term therapy. Slamming the doors of perception in the faces of those who most need to pass through them feels wrong to me. So I will be clad in Lycra for a day and hope the net effect is positive, when taking into account the number of hapless motorists who will doubtless need long term therapy if they happen to pass me on the way to Brighton.
