Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are The Geordie Ramblers and, as part of the Bigg Market & Quayside Reunion fundraising activities, we will be attempting to walk the epic, 135 mile long Tyne Trail. With your kindness and generosity we hope to raise enough money to buy a new ambulance for our fantastic local cancer charity, Daft As A Brush. The ambulance is essential for providing transport to cancer patients to and from their hospital appointments.  As well as a volunteer driver, a Daft As A Brush volunteer companion also accompanies the patient offering much needed support & reassurance during an extremely difficult time of their life. What an amazing thing to do !

We’ve named our walk ‘The Bigg Market Friends & Memories Walk’ because we’ve been so touched by the wonderful stories and photographs which have been posted on the associated Facebook group over these past few months. So many happy memories for so many people… and so many long-lasting friendships made along the way. And what about all of those ‘choons’ we used to dance and sing along to…. it’s been great to hear them all again, hasn’t it !!

Sadly, we have since lost many of those friends, very often to cancer, but their memories live on through the beautifully touching stories which have been shared about them by their own friends and relatives.

This walk is to celebrate all of those memories, all of those friendships, all of that music and all of those beautiful people we partied with in The Bigg Market & Quayside in 1985 - 2000.

We will be following the trail from both sources of the River Tyne, one on the Scottish border, the other in the Pennines, before finally ending up in Tynemouth.

We will complete the 48 mile North Tyne Trail, the weekend before The Bigg Market Reunion. Then on Thursday 6th April we’ll be heading to the source of the South Tyne in the Pennines where we will set out on the 87 mile walk all the way to the coast. We’re aiming to finish in good time for the Bigg Market Reunion on the Sunday, hopefully with enough energy left to at least tap our feet to some of the tunes from our youth. We’re all ex-Bigg Marketeers and we can’t wait to see everybody again !

Meanwhile we take encouragement from the rather optimistic words of one of our walking party….

“Divvn’t worry yasells lads, we’re following the river from source to sea so, on average, it’s gotta be doon hill aal the way“ , well, we certainly hope so !
